Alaska Brown Bear Photography Workshop

I am no longer offering Bear Tours

Join Pro Wildlife Photographer Rob Daugherty for an Alaska Grizzly Bear photography tour and workshop to Katmai National Park, Alaska. Katmai is known for having one of the largest concentration of Brown Bears in the world.

Is seeing Alaska Coastal Brown Bears on your bucket list?

If you love grizzly bears, Katmai is the place to go for a bear experience of a lifetime.

This adventure is perfect for bear lovers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts. Every day we'll see lots of bears grazing in the meadows, wrestling with each other, and roaming about the most majestic, picturesque environment Alaska offers. This is an opportunity to invest in creating memories that last a lifetime!

Remember your camera, memory cards, fully charged batteries, and come ready for full days of FUN!

The Katmai National Park photo tour is during peak bear season, at a prime location, and a great price! Our small group size enables the greatest opportunities to be in the right place, at the right time, without having to shoot around other photographers. Image critique is provided by Rob's Wildlife and is available on an individual basis or as a group. We will typically stay together during our outings though you always have the choice to stay closer to the lodge.

GETTING TO KATMAI : To get to Katmai requires a flight from Anchorage to Kodiak Island. Alaska Airlines and RAVN Alaska offer multiple daily flights between Anchorage and Kodiak. You can use this as an opportunity to explore Kodiak prior to after our Katmai tour. The lovely seaport City of Kodiak has strong Russian roots, lots of World War II history, the largest Coast Guard base in the world, a thriving fishing industry (3rd largest fishing port in North America), and is home to the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.

We strongly advise our guests to arrive in Kodiak by Thursday, June 21, to avoid potential airline and weather delays. We recommend staying Thursday night at the Shelikof Lodge in downtown Kodiak as they have a restaurant inside the lodge. It also saves you time the following morning as this is our designated shuttle pick up location the following morning.

ITINERARY

Day 1 - A courtesy shuttle picks up guests from Shelikof Lodge in downtown Kodiak and transports us to their floatplane location. Guests musts be checked in to the floatplane location no later than 11:30am. We department Kodiak at 12:30pm and enjoy a scenic floatplane ride to our lodge in Katmai. Once arriving in Katmai at approximately 1:30pm, our luggage is delivered to our room. After lunch, we head out to enjoy photographing for several hours.

Days 2-4 - Long Alaska summer days allow for ample time to photograph bears, wildlife, and exploring the lush, green scenery Katmai provides. Our Katmai photo tour is heavily centered around brown bears but other wildlife we may see include moose, bald eagles, other birds, otters, wolves, and porcupine. If we are particularly lucky during our visit, lynx and wolverines have been previously spotted in the area. Since we are in bear territory, we will get to see bear behavior in their natural environment. Translation, come ready to see bears standing up, scratching their backs on trees, bear cubs nursing, bores and sows mating, and bear fights.

Day 5 - After breakfast we venture out into nature and enjoy our last day of photographing wildlife in Katmai National Park. We'll come back to the lodge, enjoy a delicious lunch, then pack our gear for our return floatplane ride back to Kodiak. We department our lodge at approximately 1:30pm, returning to Kodiak at approximately 2:30pm. A courtesy shuttle is available to transport you back to your hotel in Kodiak or to the Kodiak airport.

After our photo tour in Katmai National Park, we strongly recommend any return flights departing Kodiak (back to Anchorage) on Day 5 are on flights departing no earlier than 4:45pm.
